The Letter Writer: Paul's Background and Torah Perspective

The Letter Writer
Paul's Background and Torah Perspective

By Homeschool Father Tim Hegg

The vast majority of the modern day studies, teachings, and theologies developed concerning the Apostle Paul all disseminate a similar perspective:

  1. That Paul underwent a typical conversion from one religion to another, from the Law-based religion of Judaism to the Grace-based religion of Christianity.
  2. That Paul preached against the Torah and Judaism and that he sought to rescue people, both Jew and Gentile, from the clutches of this works-based system.
  3. And some even teach that Paul taught that there were two ways of salvation, two ways to gain right-standing before God: the old way (works) and the new (grace).

Has the Body of Messiah missed significant blessing found in the Torah resulting from a skewed perception and misunderstanding of Paul and his writings? It is time for us to take a new and honest look at Paul as an apostle who was Torah observant, faithful to the call of Israel, and a great man that encouraged the followers of the Messiah to embrace the teachings of Moses and with great passion declared Yeshua to be the Messiah of Israel!

The Letter Writer challenges traditional Christian viewpoints of the Apostle Paul, his message and the foundation of his theological approach and understanding. Through this remarkable book Tim Hegg attempts to re-establish a biblical, historical, and cultural understanding of Paul—the Torah observant Apostle.

Tim Hegg has put together possibly the first scholarly work of the Apostle Paul that did not initially preconceive the Apostle as anti-law. Hegg empasizes the fact that Paul claimed to be the "Pharisee of Pharisees" and said that "the law is good and the commandment holy and just and good." How then can he teach others to disobey the Law of Elohim?

Paul's writings are filled with pro-law statements such as Romans 7 and 2 Timothy 3:14-17 and others. One of Paul's main missions was to show that a Gentile need not become a proselyte (a converted Jew) in order to hear of salvation through Yeshua Messiah. The Rabbinical traditions of men shackled many who desired to please Elohim. While the Law of Elohim must be adhered to, the traditions of the Pharisees were to be cast away. This is the same message given by Yeshua in the Gospels.
Hegg correctly points out that Paul and Yeshua were not trying to start a new religion. Hegg also reminds us that the "New Covenant," just like the "Old Covenant," consists of the Law.

This book should provoke you to think about what you've been told all these years about Paul's teaching. His book certainly doesn't fit the popular flow of mainstream Christianity today. He did his homework and that makes him a scholar. But, most of us would just rather wave our banners for whatever particular denomination (or person or group) that feels good or tickles our ears. It's easier to go with that flow.

The history of Paul and the church certainly bears out how the practice of our faith has changed. Shame on us for not being more careful to look at the facts. We should question every message. The 3rd chapter was a bit hard to follow unless you can appreciate documentation. He gave more than enough documentation to prove his point. Maybe we all need some good old fashion "digging it out" for ourselves to make sure that the opinion we have is really our own. I've read some other literature from ffoz.org - very educated and scholarly work. Can we possibly entertain the thought that this book could be right!?

Reading his book didn't divide my affection in the least bit. It made me feel like I fit in with the best of the believers in the 1st century. Like I wanted to fit in! Even though Hegg has given us an opportunity to re-think the issues, most of us are afraid we'll have to give up our freedom - because "I'm free". Isn't that statement a bit broad and an excuse to pick and choose what we do and don't want to do? This author has given us a lot to think about and has exposed how most of us don't really want any guidelines nor the Lord to rule over every part of our lives.

I've been thinking, ....what's so bad about Paul's lifestyle? How would this message change my life? Was he embarrassed? Afraid of what they'll say? or what he might lose? Ohhhhh...just like Paul, I hope we will learn to count it all nothing...in light of THE Lord!

This book will surely cause a serious student of the Word to think about how the message could change their life.

Tim Hegg gives perhaps of of the most well balenced and accurate portrayals of who the Apostle Paul was and what is was he is really saying. He makes use of the Scriptures, the Mishnah, Dead Sea Scrolls, and much more ancient Jewish literature in his work.

I especially appreciate how Hegg explains what the Jerusalem Council did for non-Jewish believers because unlike some Messianic Jewish scholars, Hegg does NOT believe that these were an early form of the Noachide laws, but rather that they were fences around the Torah in order to help non-Jews from falling back into their former-pagan lives. The Torah is not replaced by the Acts 15 decision; the Torah remains as a foundation. Which only makes sense because the Tanakh was the only canon of Scripture for the First Century believers.

I am at Bible College now (infact I am in a Pauline Epistles class right now) and this has been a tremendous help for me. I have yet to hear any rebutals of the things I bring up from Hegg's work.

Hands down, this book is to become the foundational book for Messianic Pauline scholarship. For those who are pro-Torah for all of God's people, Jew and non-Jew, Hegg,s book will give you and even greater foundation for your walk. May you be blessed.
