NOT IN STOCK, WAITING PUBLER REPRINT This book is a real inspiration. I've referred to my well worn copy over and over again. I believe it is one of the best homeschool books out there. It is Bible based and full or easy to implement teaching ideas. Authors Sally and Clay present practical teaching ideas using real books (Charlotte Mason approach). This book suggests the Biblical pattern of family as the center of a child's life. A refreshing change when so many homeschoolers are focusing on the "Well Trained" fad. A must read for all homeschoolers! This book contains gems of value to all home schoolers, but also integrates learning into Christian living in such a way that non-Christians would probably not find it easy to apply. Many other Christian books compartmentalise education along traditional lines. This book is based on Charlotte Mason's holistic philosophy of education. For those who don't know, this is a child-centred approach, with an emphasis on whole "living" books. The first chapters deal with home and general education and discipleship issues, including summarising arguments to most criticism of home education. The authors then briefly summarise the main pros and cons of various teaching models, including the curricular approach, unschooling, delayed academics, the classical approach, the principle approach, unit studies, computer-based education, accelerated education, and Charlotte Mason's "whole book" method. They do recognise that these are often mixed and matched. Finally they consider methods and learning styles / personality types, before dealing with home management and lifestyle issues. The book draws on sources including the Bible, great thinkers and writers, past educators, representatives of various aspects of home schooling - and their own experience. Some resource information is of course, American, but all in all, this is a very stimulating book on Christian home schooling. SHould be on every omeschool bookshelf! Avallone As a veteran homeschooler (8 years) I am often asked by those considering homeschooling how one goes about making the decision to homeschool. It is this book that I recommend EVERY time. There is plenty of good information about making the decision, handling objections from famiy and friends, and ideas to get you started. I am also often asked by those new to homeschooling how I combat "burnout"? It is this book that I turn to EVERY January when I just don't think I can manage another day. I find renewal, refreshment, and ideas to make the same old thing fresh all over again. Then there are the day-to-day conversations with other homeschoolers, how have you tackled this or that? Or do you have any ideas for....? It is this book that I turn to repeatedly for ideas. Like many homeschoolers, I have an extensive library (3000+ books) but this book is my favorite homeschooling reference. This book would even be good for the parents who don't particularly want to homeschool but just want to make their children's time at home more educational. The only parents who would probably not find this book particularly useful are those who find Christianity offensive. But if you can look past the religious aspects of the book to the ideas, even non-Christian parents could probably find enough good ideas that the book would be a worthwhile purchase. Author: Penny This is an excellent book; well worth the money. I would recommend it to new and homeschool veterans alike. The Clarksons present their ideas and philosopies without criticizing those who differ from their own. Written from a completely Christian perspective; it gives plenty of Scriptural references to guide you along. They also suggest some different curricullum for math, etc. without absolutely endorsing or condemning any one publisher; which is rare and refreshing to find in a homeschool book these days! I give it 5 stars and recommend it to any one thinking of or already homeschooling. Author: Unknown This book in an inspiration to me. More than just a quick read, it is an important tool to be referred to over and over again. I am so excited to have this resource on my shelf. There is quite a lot of guidance on how to make the entire home a place of learning, including specific info on establishing a learning room and discovery centers. Lots of useful info on building a home library as well. I LOVE this book. Author: Virginia Knowles This is a book I really needed, and I wished I had it when I first started home schooling nine years ago. There is so much food for thought in here for serious parents, and also so much practical stuff too. If you like Charlotte Mason style education, you will love this book. Even if you don't, you will still love this book. It's well worth it.
