Castle of Wisdom

Castle of Wisdom is the gripping story of Elias, a cusious young man who leaves his tiny village to search for a mysterious old ruin called The Castle of Wisdom where, according to legend, there is an inscription that unlocks the Greatest Of All Secrets. Elias' eighteen year journey carries him through episodes of danger, romance, pain, joy, hopelessness, defeat, and deep love -- all the way to ultimate victory.

This is a very interesting little book that reads like a fairy tale and is very difficult to put down. I began reading the book aloud to our children and quickly found that it contained some things that I was not ready to discuss with my younger children (ages 7 and 9). I did complete the read with my teenager, however, and it made an impact.

The story is simplistic and not necessarly great lterature but it has a good message and is entertaining.

The book is about Elias, a curious young man, who sets out to find the “Castle of Wisdom,” a mysterious old ruin where he believes he will learn The Master Truth: The meaning of life, the secret of existence, the reason for it all. Along the course of his eighteen-year journey, he experiences everything from romance, joy, and wealth, to misery, pain, and poverty. Because he is dealing with life, he encounters many seedy subjects, including some sexual situations and homosexuality (my reason for not reading it to all ages).

The story is a parable about seeking God’s Word. It’s full of symbols and occasionally poetic. I recommend it for older students.

Author: Mickey P. McNaughton
For some reason, this simple (though not simplistic) story seems to arouse the most grandiose passions, for and against. What is it about this gentle allegory that gets people so worked up? Surely it's not the storyline, a rather straight forward account of a young man's journey from ignorance toward wisdom. Is it that it doesn't toe the line regarding political correctness? Could be. Is it that it doesn't pander to the idea that homesexuality is a harmless lifestyle choice? Could be.
But I don't think these things are really at the heart of the matter. As that great Christian apologist C.S. Lewis said, "Every square inch of the universe, every moment in time, is contested between the forces of good and evil." Or something very close to that.

The real battle concerning Castle of Wisdom is the eternal battle between light and darkness, between good and evil. Those who find themselves on the wrong side of the battle are naturally offended. Those who think anything goes as far as sex is concerned are naturally put off by the book's honest treatment of deviant sexuality.

I've read a lot of books in my life, but never have I read a more honest, simple, and forthright book. It may not be the most polished book out there, but it's a true diamond in the rough.

Like warm honey-butter spread on fresh baked bread, "Castle of Wisdom" goes down easily. "Castle of Wisdom" is a story so engaging, so utterly magnetic, you do not feel you are reading a book as you are doing so. What you feel is that you are participating in the story. You are THERE, pulled into the center of the adventure, romance, and mystery. Quite possibly, Castle of Wisdom is the best book I have read in several years, and here are my reasons:

#1 Believability. Despite having high adventure in places, "Castle of Wisdom" connects on a completely human level. Every character in the story could easily step off the pages into the real world without appearing cartoonish. You will become so "close" to the protagonist that you will feel you are beside him-- not merely a casual observor of his adventures. If you are a man, you will want him to be your pal. If you are a woman, you will want him to be your lover.

#2 Suspense. Not only is the reader made to wonder about what will happen, the reader is made to CARE IMMENSELY about what will happen. You will find yourself biting your nails and pulling your hair as you read "Castle of Wisdom," and you will enjoy the feeling.

#3 Writing style. "Castle of Wisdom" makes for a fast read because the words flow together so smoothly. While the prose is polished and beautiful, it is never hard to read. This is the mark of good writing.

#4 Wisdom. Of course the story is about wisdom, and wisdom is what you will find therein, a wisdom that is pure and deep like the light of a bright star on a dark night.

I love this book, truly love it. If you read "Castle of Wisdom", you will have given yourself a present that will last a life time.

I saw some merit in this book but neither my husband nor I felt that the main character's disappointing responses to tests were worthwhile as a role model for either our 12- or 14-year old (daughter & son, respectively). Human failure is a common theme we all need to face, & in the end he does, but his spineless, thoughtless response to serious temptation (after his successful flight from homosexuals), as he blithely goes on from a girlfriend to a prostitute without a qualm, struck us both unfavorably as not a desirable role model, even if later instructed in forgiveness. We all fail, but here is a young man on his own for the first time (high degree of identification for the kids here), knowing he has a calling, pursuing a high dream--and he succeeds in one trial, & shortly thereafter walks blithely into partying & sleeping with a prostitute. Writing style also varied from interesting to a little overdone. Overall, a disappointing book we had our children stop reading. We enjoy Robin's wisdom book, however.

Castle of Wisdom is a true masterpiece from the genre of wisdom-literature. It is the story of a young man who goes on an eighteen year journey in search of the meaning of life and gains much wisdom in the process of that journey. The story will hold your attention on the literal level, but it also has a lot of symbolism and can be taken as an allegory of the soul's search for its meaning and purpose.

I do not recommend this book to everybody. It is very controversial and many of its passages can be misinterpreted, but for those wise enough to understand it, it's a great book, and absolutely wonderful book.

Author: XYTH Knoxville TN,
If you are a very technical person, such as joehead, then you probably will not enjoy Castle of Wisdom. If you are the type of person that understands symbolism and has a desire to read past the words for meaning, and you want to know of a lifetimes journey of wisdom, then Castle of Wisdom will suit you well.
The simple story of a young boy, Elias, which involves a castle that supposedly holds the worlds wisdom is the overall idea. Elias lives in a small secluded village, apart from the hustle and bustle of the big cities. Elias is sent on the journey to find the castle, mostly for his own knowledge and benefit, and also not knowing whether or not he would ever reach it. The journey lasts many years with one adventure after another, all reaping endless amounts of symbolism and wisdom. In the end, Elias and the reader both learn a great deal about the world and what role they each have to play.

Overall a great story for anyone interested in one persons journey regardless of your preference in religion, if any. The book can be read in an afternoon. Do yourself a favor and read Castle of Wisdom, and don't worry, there's an ending and it's a GOOD one.

First off, let me say that I did not agree with everything that seems to be implied in Castle of Wisdom, and I thought the writing was a little shaky in places, but the book has this one quality about it that puts it head and shoulders above 99% of the books out there-- Once you start reading it, you really and truly cannot put it down. It's the kind of story that sucks you in from the start and will not let go of you. I read it in one long sitting, paralyzed on my sofa because the plot was so intense.

The book is very controversial, and "liberal" readers will probably be offended by it, and probably should not read it though they could probably be improved by it. Castle of Wisdom is Christian and conservative. The book preaches love more than anything else, redeeming love.

The story is about a young man named Elias who travels for something like eighteen years to reach the Castle of Wisdom, a mysterious old ruin where he hopes to learn the meaning of life. Along the course of his journey he encounters everything from kings to con-artists, street walkers to nurses. There's a wonderful mix of good and bad characters, each with a distinct lesson for the young man. He experiences adventure, danger, mystery, romance, excitement-- you name it. He learns most of what he needs to learn in the process of his journey, but that final piece of wisdom awaits his discovery in the castle.

Simple Writing. Complex Symbolism. Castle of Wisdom is a nail-biting story about a man named Elias who goes on a journey to find the meaing of life.
He has heard that the meaning of life is written on a wall in a dark, mysterious old ruin called "The Castle of Wisdom" so he travels for eighteen years to find it. He grows up in the process of his journey, and he learns much wisdom along the way. I truly love the story, but I also enjoy the points that it makes.

Castle of Wisdom," though entirely different in writing style, reminds me of a C.S. Lewis book because it is one of those rare books that makes some very deep points about the meaning of life but it also gives us a fun story to read. The story is this: A young man named Elias goes on a long walk to find the "Castle of Wisdom" because he believes he will learn the meaning of life if he finds it. Of course many distracting things happen along the way-- romance, adventure, captivity, you name it. But in all circumstances he learns things, and each experience contributes to the final experience of learning the thing written in the Castle. It all ties together.

So at long last he enters the Castle, and there, written on the wall behind the throne is the meaning of life... er, I can't tell you about that part. That would ruin the reading experience.

"Castle of Wisdom" was well worth my nine bucks and one of the best books I've ever read. Enjoy!

I bought this because of the reviews on Amazon and the intriguing title; I read it at one sitting, and enjoyed it. Rhett Ellis has trodden the well-worn path of the journey symbolising the search for spiritual enlightenment, told as an allegory. Like John Bunyan's book, it is generally clear from the names of people and places what they symbolise. The strength of the book lies in the strong storyline and the realism of the action. It has to be said there is a fair amount of violence and some gore, as young Elias has to fight for his life more than once, so it is not suitable for the very young. A good story with a message.
